I took a long break from this game, but with Dawntrail creeping around the corner, I figured I'd come back.
Firstly, I tried downloading all the patches after the client was installed and was hit with an error stating it was unable to patch, so I tried for round two and got it on the second try.
That was strike one; now on to strike two. I go to the mog station to pay for my subscription only to be hit with, "This card is unavailable." So, apparently Square Enix had put out a statement saying this is a common issue with Visa Debit cards and should be resolved in JULY. So two months of having this problem? What? The work around is paying for Crysta using Amazon Pay (even though it's with the same debit card, but whatever), then using that Crysta for a month of game time. So there's a couple extra steps.
The third strike: error 90001. I get into the game, decided to make a new character, enter my first cutscenes. Boom. Disconnected. Go in again. Disconnected... Again. I finally get through the cutscenes. Disconnected. Disconnect after disconnect. This is all within an hour of paying for my subscription. My internet speeds were pretty steady, between 90 to 100 Mbps. After some googling, found out this is usually an issue with the ISP not playing nice with FFXIV's NTT, where the signal goes. So many steps to do to try and get your ISP to work with FFXIV, I decided it wasn't worth the hassle, especially when my provider works very well with Guild Wars 2 (which I tested after giving up). I contacted both Square Enix and Amazon. Square Enix (surprise surprise) just refuses to issue a refund, while Amazon didn't give me a refund, they did recommend I just dispute the charge with my bank, and so I did. I got my chargeback, and will probably be permanently banned, but that's okay. There's plenty of other online games out there that don't disconnect me.
