In all honesty, I did enjoy the movie. I'll say some spoilers but I'll try to keep it as minimum as possible.
For those who don't know the movie is directed by these twin youtuber brothers known as RackRacka, this film was their directorial debut. I say this film matches its hype. But I understand it is not for everyone. To me, horror in itself is such a wide spectrum of countless stories. So some "oldheads" might not like it so much.
This film is all Australian-based, from the setting to the characters and their matter of speaking. I say this film is well-catered to its audience which is Gen-Z to Millennials. It is well-paced and doesn't linger on its mysteries/lore.
Review: I give it a 5/5, the script is good. I mean it is an Indie type horror film and the debut of its directors. How the characters spoke to each other just felt genuine to me and even how they interacted with each other. Plus it's fresh and feels real because by all means the characters are not perfect, especially the protagonist that is still grieving their mother's suicide after 1 year and has tried to fit herself into her best friend's family because she has grown so distant from her father. She makes very questionable choices but what else is there to expect from a teenager of her age? I like the very concept of how these kids treat the hand. Unlike a Quija Board or a Book of the Dead, these kids when reaching out to the dead are getting a rush from it. As if it was alcohol or drugs. And like any of those substances, taking too much can lead to severe consequences. There are no jump scares, but my goodness did it have me gripping my seat from the anticipation. I really did enjoy the practical effects of the gore and of the spirits. Even with the acting, I'm unknown of the Australian cast but when they acted possessed by the spirits you could just see the different spirits possessing them. I wouldn't say it's the best horror film. But it is enjoyable and I would absolutely watch it again and recommend it to a friend.
P.S. I've read 3-4 negative reviews and I feel like people are hating it just to hate it or because it was directed by "YouTubers".
P.P.S. This is my first-ever review for a film so forgive me for any spelling or punctuation errors. I hope it was helpful and gives you an open mind to the film if you consider watching it.
