This is the book I really hoped Hillbilly Elegy would be. I come from a rural and impoverished family from East Tennessee and I really appreciate the nuanced and compassionate treatment of the characters. I don’t see that a lot in how Appalachian culture is portrayed in popular media. Also the inclusion of the predatory nature of the Opioid and coal industry.
