I attended the Christmas Day show with 10 family members (ranging in ages of 14-62 yrs old) after a full belly from Christmas Day Dinner....oh and I took Mia (my 4 lb Yorkie, who was very entertained). We attended the 7p show and OMG.....Everything was very well done!!! The storyline was easy to follow, the music and vocals were GREAT, the acting was OUTSTANDING, even though the movie was 2m5 hrs long....it did not feel like it. We cried....we laughed...we had a good time. I will say that it gave me clarity on a few things that I did not fully understand in the original movie such as Celie and Netties father, why Mister's was not able to financially maintain his land, why Cellie was even interested in opening a pants store, how Nettie landed in Africa and some other details. This movie just painted a broader brush into each character. I will say that I wish Hallie and H.E.R. roles were reversed. Or I wish they would have given H.E.R. a singing part because she is that relevant to the culture. But overall the movie was GREAT. Thank you Oprah for delivering some Spectacular and full of great quality for our family to enjoy after Christmas dinner. We just created another family memory BECAUSE OF YOU! THANK YOU!
Oh I forgot to add that I wish they would have done the GOD IS TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING scene differently....that scene made the movie and Tarji would have been able to carry the weight of reproducing her own version of that element. I wish they would have really packed a bunch with that scene. Overall, I still give it a 5 and anyone who N has already seen the original would know thus is not a movie for kids /youth....so I pray everyone used good discretion.
