⭐Spoilers⭐ I went in knowing it was a musical. I love musicals but also have to be in the mood for one. I loved that it wasn't a 1 tone musical, no pun intended, it has variations such as singing softly directly to someone no bells and whistles, to the grand production fantasy with bright colors like La La Land. For me, changing it up makes it less in your face and makes it feel less like a Disney character.
I feel some audience do not understand this version of the Joker is a stand alone character with a based in reality character arc. Not trying to reinvent the wheel but also not redoing the same character like a puppet.
The 1st Joker was the how and why. Joker 2 is the reality of what would happen to a person like that. Because what happens in the real world when an average Joe acts as if there are no laws and acts on their delusions of grandeur? Someway, somehow their actions or they meet an end.
It's funny because I don't like era films, read the original DC Batman and Joker comic books as a kid, love the other portrayed Jokers, and wanted more shed and mayhem for this version of the character. But after resonating with Joker in Joker 1, having a few years of the view of the hallway and keeping in mind this version is more reality based of what would happen to a psychopath or personality disorder person. I like the art and what was done. And yes I love how they passed the torch at the end. I noticed that character in the background every time and got the sense he was obsessed with Joker. So the next step makes sense to me. I didn't like the mental abuse relationship swap with Joker and Harley but why can't a female be THE one?
For those struggling to see it as a stand alone. Think of it as a fan fiction or that one limited edition 2 part alternate reality comic book. But I get it. Fans want top of the mountain psycho Joker that spreads chaos like Heath's Joker and Bane. I WANT THAT TOO!
Maybe we'll get that one day....maybe we won't.
