Sons of Sam is an excellent character study of Maury Terry, the reporter who became obsessed with the Son of Sam case. The series starts by dropping the viewer into mid-1970s New York, and with vintage stock footage, anchors the narrative to the times. The next episodes play out as a standard, true-crime detective story with Terry following leads into dark corners. But by the end of the third installment, "The Ultimate Evil", the narrative starts to shift to Terry's judgement on the case. No lead is too crazy not to chase down. In the end, the series gives us a tragic character who may have been right about another shooter, but due to his ego, bypassed the facts while chasing windmills. Well done.
