I can’t help but feel extremely disappointed in this product. The show had some great ideas going with this but completely botched the execution. I will go over some of the things I really enjoyed about the show and some of the things I think it really failed at.
First let’s talk about the things I like about the show.
- The idea of a “failed supe”
This idea is not touched on enough in the show but it’s a great premise for the main character. The main characters ability is to control blood. They talk a very small amount about how this is more of a villain power than a heros. Would have loved to see more of that type of narrative.
-The forest
Flipping the dynamic back on the fact that these supes were created in a lab and are experiments is a great idea. I would have loved to see more of a thriller/ horror type of vibe from this but it’s almost pushed aside and not really a main threat by the end because one the the characters legitimately walks in and destroys everything extremely quickly.
-Character with with flaws
Every character has a flaw in the show. That gives most of these characters way to improve themselves in a meaningful way and for some characters we get that.
Now let’s talk about where this story really starts to fail itself and the audience.
-Inconsistencies in itself
The first big conflict is when our main characters go out to party and almost kill someone at a club. The main character saves the person life but she is ultimately the person that they are going to pin the blame on the save the other students. Before this can happen the flame boy kills the director and this problem just goes away. No one get blamed for the accident, nothing bad happens to the other students, nothing happens. They do a similar thing in another episode when they remove the memories of all the characters. This just feels like they needed to add an episode and slow down the show then actually adding anything meaningful to this story. This is the biggest problem that this show has. It continues to write itself into a corner for no reason. At the very end of the show we see Homelander see that the main character hurt one of the other supes and get upset by this and attacks the main character. Homelander has killed so many supes why does he magically care now about this elitism for supes now? The whole idea of Homelander is that he thinks HE is better than everyone! He sees himself as a god among everything so why does he care? They only did this to match the theme of the show and not the theme of the character. I would have much rather Homelander injure everyone and call himself the hero of the situation, since the only thing he cares about is his own reputation. This was the event that probably frustrated me the most about this series. You have all these great ideas but you failed to execute them properly.
