So I just read this a few nights ago and I was SUPER impressed. The book is funny but memorable, with real themes and relatable characters. If you haven’t read The Lightning Thief and you don’t want spoilers, don’t read ahead, but here’s a summary.
Percy Jackson is on a field trip for his school, Yancy Academy when a girl, Nancy Bobofit makes him mad by throwing her lunch at his best friend, Grover, and therefore gets a face full of fountain water (which she totally deserved). The school, being mortals, didn’t see what happened and thought Percy pushed her. Percy is led by Ms. Dodds, the math teacher, into the museum, where he thinks he is going to be punished. Instead, she turns into a Fury, or a Kindly One. His Latin teacher comes in and throws him a pen, which turns into a sword he uses to fight it.
When he returns, Percy finds that apparently Ms. Dodds never existed, and Ms. Kerr, who he has never seen is the math teacher. Back at school, Percy finds that Grover is hiding something from him. Percy thinks Grover knows Ms. Dodds existed.
Later, on the way home from school, Percy sees three old ladies making a gigantic pair of socks. They snip they yarn and Grover panics. He explains that they are the three Fates, and they only snip the yarn when someone is about to die. Percy thinks Grover means him and freaks out.
When Percy gets home, his mom announces that they are going to the beach. They drive there and stay in the cabin for a while, but a hurricane starts. Grover appears on the doorstep, but he has the bottom half of a goat, making him a satyr. They drive together to a summer camp where he’ll be safe, but are sidetracked by the Minotaur, which Hades sent. Percy kills the Minotaur, but Hades takes his mom in a flash of light. Percy and Grover make it to camp before Percy passes out.
Percy wakes up to a girl feeding him popcorn flavored pudding(ambrosia) and falls asleep again. When he finally comes around for good, Grover is standing there. He looks normal, convincing Percy that it was all a dream, but then he thanks Percy and gives him the Minotaur horn. Grover takes Percy to the director of camp, Dionysus, the god of wine and learns that everything in Greek mythology is real when his Latin teacher, Mr. Brunner, introduces himself as Chiron and reveals himself as a centaur. With Annabeth, the girl that was feeding him ambrosia, he learns the camp is for the children of mortals and gods, making him a demigod.
During a game of Capture The Flag, after being pushed into the creek, he realizes that the water heals him and gives him strength, and he is the son of Poseidon, god of the sea.
Percy is then offered a quest with Grover and Annabeth to find and return Zeus’s lightning bolt.
Okay, I was going to summarize the whole book, but I’m running out of time, bored and taking too much space. So bye! Hope you like the book!!!
