I personally dont understand why this book received the hate that it did. It really seems as if people were looking for a sequel to The Night Circus, and did not receive one. Yes, it is a little long & draggy at the beginning, but it is Definitely not boring. People are comparing it to The Night Cirus, however...they’re different books with different vibes, and different types of magic. It is not similar to the Night Circus in my opinion and there is nothing wrong with it. However, it is also not super action packed. I enjoy books that tell you something at the beginning that all of a sudden makes sense in the middle or whatever, and this is EXACTLY that book. I cant really say much without spoiling it, but this is by far THE best book i have read in over 10 yrs. the ending actually managed to surprise me, which is rare now a days. If you enjoyed her first book (the Night Circus) you will 100% love this book but 3x more. Definitely my favourite book.
A lot of reviews are saying the book went nowhere with no purpose, and i genuinely feel like those people either didn't understand the book, or didn’t read it fully. It is an adventure book, and yes the ending leaves you wanting more, but that is a good thing personally. There are people also discussing the lack of character development, and i do agree there is not much, and the characters stay solid, but again... i dont feel this is a bad thing. Of course, opinions are opinions. There are plenty of parts that made me feel like they didn’t need to be included, but that was mostly towards the beginning. Once the plot thickened everything was important, and came into importance later one. Everything is real and yet a metaphor.
