Terrible storyline and it reads like a political essay, do not read if you value your time or sanity. Nineteen eighty-four is a dystopian text by George Orwell that follows the sexist and misogynistic protagonist Winston Smith, who was named after the ruthless British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The text is told from the third person limited perspective of Winston, an oppressed Outer Party citizen who lacks freedom and who lives a wretched life. The text uses first person narration so that the audience know what Winston is experiencing and his thoughts and feelings. 1984 details the use of propaganda, a lack of privacy for the citizens, and a significant focus on an Orwellian political ideology called “Oligarchical Collectivism” which makes it more like a political essay than a novel. Winston falls in lust with Julia, another outer party member whom he previously wanted to rape, torture, and kill. Winston has had negative experiences with women in the past and came close to murdering his wife before they separated. Ironically, Winston fantasises torturing Julia but is eventually captured by the Thought Police and is tortured himself, stripping him of his identity. This demonstrates to the reader both the internal and external experience of living under a totalitarian government. Throughout 1984 we understand Winston Smith's emotions, thoughts, and memories, but not those of the other characters like Julia or O’Brian. Orwell uses hyperbole, metaphors, and irony are language features used to present the viewpoint of a rebellious dissident suffering under the rule of an oppressive regime.
