coming from someone who has never even read the book series or played any of the video games, i genuinely enjoyed the witcher. I came into the showing knowing absolutely nothing other than the fact it was going to be a high fantasy.
like every high fantasy story, the first season or book is going to be a whole lot of information dropping. viewers are going to be saturated with information. it’s part of the world building process. of course you’re going to be confused, you’re entering a entirely different universe. however, that’s what i love most about these stories, you really have to use your brain and think through the information being given to you. when i watched the witcher, i backtracked on multiple occasions to clarify on what was being discussed. the witcher does a great job of forcing one to pay attention if they want to understand the events unfolding before them.
the witcher honestly doesn’t give you all the answers you want in the first season. the show is setting a foundation for events and characters to begin their stories. had the show rushed the meeting of geralt and ciri immediately within the first few episodes, the season would’ve collapsed. development is key within fantasy stories such as the witcher. if you’re someone who needs all the details dropped at your feet in the first couple minutes of a show, you definitely aren’t going to like the witcher.
but for any other fantasy fan out there, i recommend that you 100% watch this show. it is a brilliant introduction to this series. if you are a prior witcher fan, the show will most definitely make more sense to you, and you’ll understand the gaps within the story. if you’re a newcomer like me, be prepared to think, but know you’ll be entertained from start to finish.
