Very touching movie about a young man from an immigrant family breaking away from the family tradition in order to become a Jazz singer on Broadway. The movie has the first ever talking scene. The main actor Al Jolson basically plays his own life, as he also ran away from home for the exactly same reason. The movie has the famous cantor Yossele Rosenblatt singing the Kol Nidre prayer which tugs on one's heart strings, like nothing else. Even if one does not know the language. It is a prayer of asking G-d for forgiveness for all the promises we make for the coming year, that we may not be able to keep, as humans none of us are perfect.
