This book finally captured me about half-way through. The back story cliche of robotic Artificial Friends seemed prosaic and predictable. Once Klara’s REAL origin story broke through, however—why she was adopted as Josie’s AF—the story grabbed me. Ishiguru wrestles with humans’ innate traits and motivations, with love in its many confusing forms, and with the potential and limitations of both biological and engineered existence. With those issues, the book became compelling.
