I have seen Wicked three times now and I have to say- I'm just so happy I could MELT!!!
Overall, I really enjoyed this movie! If you are a music theatre, Wicked, the Wizard of Oz, and/or fan of anyone cast in the movie (especially Arianators), you most likely will have a really fun time seeing Wicked.
You may not thoroughly enjoy this movie as much if you are not one of these things, but I would still argue that you might really enjoy the story of Wicked (that alone has captured the hearts of so many people and the reason why it is one of the longest running shows on Broadway) and be surprised by the performances of those cast as the leading and supporting actors.
In addition, this feels like the first time in a long time that a musical has taken pride in not shying away from it being a musical and is unapologetically itself, and typically when that happens, we feel we are seeing something authentic and real and true and lean in- which is exactly what this experience felt like. ✨✨✨
This movie is a real musical theatre masterpiece on the screen- the acting, singing, choreography, costumes, lighting- it is all superb, worthy of so many nominations and awards, and arguably well worth the wait that we have been waiting for for YEARS now.
With this movie, you can FEEL the amount of love, PRIDE, consideration, and commitment that went into making this movie adaptation of Wicked a soaring hit.
For any Wicked fans, this movie really honors the Broadway musical- they do not take out any lines or songs from the musical- everything is there, just certain scenes are expanded upon and longer than they are in the Broadway musical to enhance them (which is successfully done in my opinion). And there are LOTS of Easter Eggs!! :)
In addition, by them building the world of Oz, it feels like you are transported to a real, magical place versus feeling like you are looking at a movie dominated by CGI effects (the train, the fields of poppies, the Emerald City- all of that is real! )
Casting wise, the two leading ladies, Ariana and Cynthia, have so much passion about the musical and it's so contagious you can feel it through their acting, singing, and dancing. They both have so much power with their vocals, great comedic timing, and insane chemistry between the two of them. Don't doubt these two- they truly make a wonderful Elphie and Glinda and I can't wait to see what they bring to Part 2.
With all of this being said, I believe that Wicked Part 1 is worth the hype- it is arguably the movie of the year! ✨✨✨
My recommendation: Dress up in pink and green with your wands and hats and brooms and go see Wicked! Just make sure you go to the bathroom before and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE no singing!!! (Thank you to the wonderful audiences I had that didn't sing BUT applauded after numbers were done (that was quite a lovely theatrical experience to have in a movie theater! 👏🏻)
