Ok, so I just got back from seeing this movie and I have thoughts. Let's start off by saying I'm a fan of the Synderverse. I'm also a DC fan in general(will always be better than Marvel). So I've watched a lot of Superman media. From George Reeves to Tyler Hoechlin. I've seen a Superman's orgin story a million times. I was sure you couldn't possibly find a way to make this character engaging enough to differentiate between the multiple different incarnations. Superman is an alien. He has a crap ton of super powers and is the All American good guy. In 2025 that seems kinda boring. Yet, to my surprise this was really good. David Corenswet gave a take on Superman that is refreshing. His Superman is a confident hero. Not coming of age or growing into his status but a well established full fledged super hero. He isn't looking to find himself. This Superman knows who he is and what he is here to do.
I loved Henry Cavill's take on the character much like Tom Welling's. Their Supermans were finding their purpose, their place in our(regular humans) world. They were becoming Superman. David Corenswet IS Superman. While his size and voice make the klutzy Clark Kent alter ego seem ridiculous in comparisons to those around him that's a factor of the character in the continuity. The interactions with the Kents, especially John seems so authentic to what a Kansas country father and son would be.
Lois was true to what the character should be. Not just some damsel in need of saving but again a confident journalist. She wasn't Superman's goal the entire film. Which is a change from almost every single piece of Superman media I've ever seen. Every other Superman would push everything else to the side just to save Lois. Lois is important but she isn't his entire reason for getting up in the morning like many other Superman.
Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor was the right mix of menacing, egotistical, brilliant and funny. Some people play Lex too campy. Some play him to evil. Some play him as super genius that knows everything without explanation. Others play him as just a ego maniac. I believe Jon Cryer's first appearances(last season was bad) as Lex were the most accurate and best(full adult) depiction I've seen until now. Michael Rosenbaum was the epitome Lex as a young man. I didn't like Jesse Eisenberg's neurotic Lex. I was no fan of Gene Hackman's comedic Lex nor Michael Cudlitz' super villainous Lex. Hoult gave the egotistical, brilliant, menacing and kinda humorous Lex that was so good against Corenswet's Superman. Even though he explains his hatred you can see it just in his actions alone. I think I have a new favorite Lex Luthor.
Without spoiling the themes in this story are super topical and I predict a certain group of people will be very triggered by some of the things done and said by certain characters. So this weekend will probably be quite entertaining online.
