The Kemba Smith story is true and is based upon stories and experiences of many girls caught up in the juvenile justice system. I speak from first hand experience as I once worked in the largest juvenile detention facility in the US. Male inmates outnumbered females at a minimum of 6 to 1 and the majority of the girls became involved in the system because of faulty relationships with male partners. Both vulnerable or at risk male and female teens require more attention and individualized services prior to juvenile involvement but unfortunately that service is not currently provided or available in the US social service systems.
