One of the most memorable characters of the century has been crafted by Kingsolver in Demon. She got this one on the money. I’m pretty sure this novel will be remembered for decades. The opiate crisis has taken and damaged so many lives unnecessarily. She lays bare what that really means to people as if she witnessed it herself. May the lessons be burned into our collective consciousness. Moreover she’s made a bold statement about the risks of tolerating poverty and the costs of stripping purpose from people’s lives. I won’t forget Demon Copperhead any time soon, that’s for sure. Thank goodness I went ahead and read this incredible novel to the end even when I wanted to cry for all he endures.
