Absolutely superb acting, casting, directing, writing. This is a must see even for those not into suspense horror. The characters are authentic and the dialogues real. While very bible based it doesn’t fall into ridiculous stereotypes of evil. Just take scripture literally and there’s a wealth of madness to explore. Neither does it push an anti-religion agenda. If anything, its authenticity makes me believe that creator, writer, director Mike Flanagan was raised in the Catholic Church. I don’t want to point out performances since every actor did an outstanding job but I would be remiss not to mention Hamish Linklater (Father Paul) and Samantha Sloyan (Bev Keane); there wasn’t a facial twitch out of place. Some may find the dialogue verbose but the writing is so spot on as to be, at times, profound. Sometimes brevity leaves too much out and the few long dialogues there are serve to build suspense. All round, a perfect tale magnificently told.
