Someone said “Nabokov intended to bring light to the matter” (Sally Horner case, greatly inspired the book apparently). Then they go on to say “but humbert humbert is a pedo”. (More specifically hebephilia which is still a pedophile) Ok? That doesn’t mean the author was or ever condoned it either. IT IS A FICTIONAL BOOK (Kinda sad i have to point this out too) HUMBERT HUMBERT IS OBVIOUSLY NOT A REAL PERSON (yes I know people like the character exist) The author himself didn’t want the story to be romanticized and as an outer pov despite Humbert using “romantic language” you should be disturbed. The film adaptations are off (with Sue Lyon and James B. Harris allegedly having an “irl lolita relationship off screen” and the book covers well (here are nabokov’s original instructions for the book cover: I want pure colors, melting clouds, accurately drawn details, a sunburst above a receding road with the light reflected in furrows and ruts, after rain. And no girls. … Who would be capable of creating a romantic, delicately drawn, non-Freudian and non-juvenile, picture for LOLITA (a dissolving remoteness, a soft American landscape, a nostalgic highway—that sort of thing)? There is one subject which I am emphatically opposed to: any kind of representation of a little girl.)
