Disappointing and lacking depth of character. The intended symbolism or associations with Eucalyptus, was too abstract and mostly failed. The characters emotions at times seemed lacking and unrealistic. Did Ellen lack courage and was her father misguided by his obsession with Eucalyptus as a basis for a suitable husband? Did patience prevail along with acceptance happily ever after? The story telling aspect was entertaining however I was lost with the French widows paragraphed reference to Ellen?! Really no idea how this book won the Miles Franlklin Award.
