*WARNING SOME SPOILERS AHEAD* ------‐------------------------------------------------------------------ Reading the book right now, and wow. It's not often I can say this, but this was an amazing adaptation. I mean is there stuff missing? Sure. Does it explain everything? Nope. But Dune is not a short or compact story. Exposition, description, and progression are compacted down into just a few paragraphs in Dune. In fact, most books are like that. It's what makes making a book adaptation so hard, you have to translate all the features from one thing into an entirely different thing. But Dune did an amazing job, it often would move around and combine lines and scenes. But only ever for the purpose to successfully and coherently adapt it. The Dune series is also particularly exposition filled. With world building rivaling that of Tolkien. So of course not every detail is going to fit in. So they put in the ones that matter directly to the story and is something the audience would otherwise look at and wonder why they didn't do it this way. Most of the things they missed were either not yet important enough to mention or were more for the hard-core fans. Such as the lack of computers explanation. Not note, that I did say most. But this was only part one. It'd be like judging Fellowship of the Ring after only watching the first part. It's not over yet, once it's completely done. We'll have plenty of room and subject there to judge. In other terms, I saw another review say that the soundtrack was bad. To that I say; Really? I think it was expertly done, it gave a very Middle-Eastern feeling to Arrakis, which has plenty of Middle-Eastern inspiration. I also saw someone say that it didn't have enough action, and while admittedly the trailers did show plenty of that, and some parts of the movie felt more like a trailer to the sequel. Well the trailer part can't be excused. The sequel part can. It's a representation of Paul's 'visions' it happens just as much in the books as well, it's kinda a key part of it, and I thought there was plenty of action. Action isn't just gunfights and brawls, and even still there was lots of that. But yeah, no massive armies clashing. So overall, I feel like far too many people are judging too soon. It's only half of a story, if even. As an aspiring book writer, I can say that if a book of mine was made in this degree of dedication to the book. I'd be proud to see it, and I think Frank Herbert have have been too.
