Nayanika Mahtani’s “Across the Line” spans three generations and appeals to all three generation of readers — grandmothers to mothers to granddaughters. It spans the subcontinent from Rawalpindi to New Delhi and across the oceans to London. Its protagonist Toshi Sahni’s character gives the entire plot great verisimilitude. Nostalgia for the “senior adults” and a yearning and hope for the young.
