Total blast from start to finish. The story keeps you on your toes the entire time and lends to great rewatchability. I really grew to love and root for each character, even the characters you want to hate you will end up loving by the end. The violence is graphic and deeply satisfying working well with the incredible fight choreography. Genuinely one of the most original and gripping movies I have watched in a long time. I almost want to watch it with a notebook in hand so I can write down how every little detail weaves into the bigger picture!

I'm gonna be straight up with all of you. When I saw the first trailer for this movie I thought ‘yeah this is gonna be trash’. Decided to go see it on a whim with a friend because we love bad movies and making fun of them. Imagine my surprise when this movie is actually REALLY GOOD. Keep reading if you're interested in my essay but here's your warning lol. First things first I want to get the bad out of the way. Some of the character interactions feel forced and unnatural, along with a bit of the dialogue. The CG is also pretty bad. But I wanted to get that started because it does not culminate in ruining the movie. Just a heads up if you're one of those stingy people who demands writing perfection. Now for the good. From the opening scene a tone of quiet menace is established. This is carried through the whole movie and makes for a genuinely unsettling atmosphere. After the admittedly awkward character introduction at the beginning of the movie, they begin to feel more real and interesting. There really wasn’t one character I didn't like. Speaking of characters and development, I want to quickly touch on Leon and Jill. I really like what they did with them. I can't lie, Jill and Claire always felt really similar to me. But in this movie they gave Jill a new personality. The ‘I’m tired but will still shoot you and am slightly deranged’ kind of new personality. She is lazily violent and I love it. I also love throughout the movie how she consistently has zero trigger discipline. It's a small detail but a great one. Leon is a little whiny at the beginning, but he's really believably confused. And the way his character grows over time is just wonderful. I also have to discuss the pacing and cinematography. This movie is really well shot. There were a lot of times where I was anticipating a threat even though there wasn't one, just because the way it was filmed made me so uncomfortable. The pacing I think is almost perfect. Its such a slow burn to inevitable chaos and you want to see every second of it. The way the stories are split up also doesn't fail to keep your attention. I wanted to know how everyone's adventure culminated and ended. There was never a moment where I wished ‘Ugh, can we go back to the Spencer Mansion’ or something like that. The sets and practical elements are perfect. End of note. This movie was great. I know I’m gonna have a lot of people who disagree with me, but I love it. As a moderate fan of Resident Evil and a huge fan of horror movies, I highly recommend.
