Delicate subtle careful exploration of the unspoken and unreachable in mother daughter relationships but really all relationships. Very Melbourne but with a misty evocative Japanese backdrop. In my book group, every reader saw their own lives reflected and subsequently produced wildly different interpretations. I loved this book but can understand that others may not. The member of our book group who liked it the least admitted to crying while reading it because it reminded her of a particular episode in her life. No-one else in our group cried.
