If you didn’t read the books, it’s a decent standalone movie.
If you read the books, it’s a catastrophe from start to finish. Todd was never a killer and he killed 3 things within the first 20 minutes. There was never any idolization of the Mayor by Todd. Aaron was a moot character in the movie and they could’ve avoided him entirely. The movie doesn’t follow the original plot at all and sort of combines all the books together in the worst, out of order way possible. Movies aren’t always going to be like the books I’m aware, but Viola’s backstory was butchered. The movie turned Todd and Viola into a teenage romance instead of two literal children leaning on eachother for survival. There was no Wilf, or Hildy, or almost any crucial plot points with the movie ending on an excruciating cliff hanger with dozens of open plot holes. The fact that Patrick Ness blessed off on it is absolutely incredulous.
LOVE the books, avoid the movie
