I don't usually write reviews, but I was compelled to do so for this film by what I can only call a life-changing experience. The Whale is hands down my all-time favorite movie. An extremely moving performance by Brandon Fraser, the Whale couples visually interesting cinematography and excellent set direction with intense subject exploration. This movie follows the play closely and accurately portrays anxiety, depression, and internal turmoil with dramatic flair. It allows us to deeply empathize with the protagonist with a tumultuous and engaging soundtrack, a reflection of Charlie's own emotions as metaphors for scenes of the book "Moby Dick." Contrary to other criticisms, I don't believe this work strives to inspire pity in the viewer or insult the protagonist; rather, it explores a father's struggles as he attempts to reconnect with his daughter and other members of his life IN SPITE OF his life-threatening conditions. Supremely raw and real; many other films don't stand a candle to this. Do yourself a favor and watch it!
