This is one of my favorite movies when I was kid. The idea of a normal girl developing psychic powers really got my imagination going back then. I mean, what kid wouldn’t want the ability to move things with their mind?
Anyway, this is a classic film through and through. It has the right amount of comedy, darkness, fantasy and a little bit of violence. Not too much, though. Just eneough to keep this film kid-friendly. I love how the actors portrayed the characters. Mara Wilson was the perfect choice to play Matilda. Miss Honey is just so delicate. Miss Trunchbull really got me annoyed and irritated, and Danny DeVito is a genius, as always.
I really love how the film was able to show a lot of sensitive issues. Matilda’s family life, for example. Her neglect and abuse was shown in a subtle way. It’s not that offensive but it was really clear. Her school life as well was shown in such a way that was not too offensive but portrays a clear message. These are just a couple of things I noticed, but throughout the film, certain issues were shown. The movie really did justice to the book. Roald Dahl’s style was still prominent and the larger issues at hand was still depicted.
Matilda was made into a musical before the pandemic. I had the chance to see it live on stage. It was magical. The kids were brilliant and I love how the play stayed true to the book, just like the movie. It was a bit challenging at first because the English accents of the actors were too strong. But I got used to it.
Again, this is another highly recommended movie to watch. It’s perfect for family night. The kids will surely love it.
