I read almost all the Google reviews. For those people that claim there was more Spanish than English spoken and they had to rely on subtitles. I agree. However, you should all find solace in knowing you missed absolutely nothing in the language. Why? There was more profanity used in this series than you will ever find in a boat filled with drunken sailors.
I am 1st generation Colombian from Medellin and familiar with the language. My family emigrated in the late 60's so I am really old school. My parents raised us with the utmost respect. My late father would be disgusted to hear the filth that constantly came out of their mouths. In the first few episodes, it was nice to hear the genuine Paisa accents. However, as the series progressed, I was better off reading the subtitles than hearing that garbage.
Many reviews pointed out to the lack of acccuracy in the facts. There will always be an exageration for the sake of movies. I do believe the ruthlessness of the cartel was properly depicted and true to character. Many (Medellin) Colombians that lived here in the States experienced the repercussions of the Medellin cartel. We either knew someone in Colombia that was a victim or we were considered outcasts and stereotyped. Not all Colombians were willing participants. Similarly, not all Italians were mobsters. I chose to study law and became an attorney. For the majority of Colombians who lived through this era, we would rather not be reminded. It was horrible!
Let's be clear, Griselda was not easy on the eyes. In fact, she was rather homely. I think the fact that Griselda was unattractive is what helped her blend in and gain notoriety. For as much as Sofia didn't want the viewers to see her real self in Griselda, I still did. I also commend her for her performance. I think she did a great job.
Let's face it, many of us will never know exactly what went on with Griselda Blanco. Overall, the Drug Cartel era was one where drugs were valued over human life. To now see this glorified on the big screen is dismal.
Lastly, I clearly remember in the 80's & 90's where I would shutter to say I was Colombian due to the backlash. Today, I am proud not only to be Colombian but to see the advances that Colombia has made since the cartel was eliminated.
