Loved this! Great empowering messages for girls without simultaneously disempowering and emasculating the male characters. Great depictions of various women as: * victim; * powerful but misguided; * controlled; and * power with empathy. Message: You can be strong… yet strength comes from your capacity to be empathetic.

Great camera angles. Full of underlying themes and subplots, where do you begin? The intransigence of youth. Fixation on looks. No escape from ageing. Unconditional love of family. Broken families. Juxtaposition of family units. Mental health. Hook ups. Children being forced to “grow up” too quickly. Hypotheticals re medical experimentation… what do you allow “for the greater good”? Like the resort, appearances are deceiving. Not for the faint hearted… or if you’re looking for mindless entertainment. Loved it!

**SPOILERS BELOW** Gotta say I actually liked it. Probably a smidge too long but the cinematography and wardrobe was amazing and Pugh fantastic. Styles gets a bad wrap for his performance as being 'wooden' or lack lustre against Pugh, but I felt that he portrayed Jack in the 'VR' world as who he was in the 'real' world - a nobody who felt emasculated by his super successful strong partner who dreamed of a world where he was the hero and she was a classic '50s 'Stepford Wife'. Jack couldn't be anything in the VR world other than who he truly was so I think Style's performance was believable. The 'dancing Jack' scene was full of symbolism. The only thing I wasn't comfortable with was Frank's wife Shelley stabbing him and saying it was her turn and he was a "stupid man". That wasn't explained and made it sound like SHE was actually the one controlling the VR experience with him as the male front. Were the writers secretly saying women actually PREFER to be subjugated and feminism has been a 'disaster' for them in the west? It certainly had a very anti-feminist undertone.
