Spoilers ahead!
At first i thought it was going to be an amazing movie. The premise starts off quite strong actually with a world plunged in darkness because there is a deadly human virus that kills humans as well as less oxygen on earth creating a deadly atmosphere to live in. Some big tech company asks for an engineer, Ethan, because they received a message from the future to send him there. Hence, they think Ethan is the answer, and that he can bring back a cure. Amazing start.
However, as the plot unravels, the story begins to reveal so many plot holes. I assume the producers thought it would bring some mystery, but it was extremely difficult to understand what was going on. The drama between the two engineers was ridiculously inflated because they don’t reveal from the beginning what it is they are arguing about. Not to mention the fact that Jude, the second engineer, raised Ethan. So you would think they were practically brothers despite not being bound by blood. You can see how Ethan listens to Jude and how strong their connection is at what looked like a bar earlier in the movie. Yet, after Jude arrives in the future to save Ethan’s life, it seemed like all those years together meant nothing. Maybe it is just me, but that makes no damn sense.
Towards the end of the movie, you begin to understand the real meaning behind the arguing and deception. The viewers learn the truth behind Ethan’s past and that is when the two engineers struggle and Jude kills himself which was extremely anti-climactic. Now, despite the fact that, in the movie, human life is extinct, they argue and waste time without making any progress instead of working towards fixing it. Finding a solution to their problem using both their brains would've been a better story than whatever drama conspired throughout their time in the future. It would’ve made for a better story and an extremely better ending. Apparently, all Ethan had to do was dump some plants into the time machine and send it back which lead to the end of the movie where Ethan finds a thriving city instead of the rubble he previously saw.
Now this may seem like a scathing review. And you would be terribly right. It could have done extremely better. The whole story was based on sending Ethan to the future so he could find a cure. Instead, they meaninglessly argued when the story could have revolved around exploring the ruins of the past, and understanding what could have been done to prevent the extinction. Logically speaking, the human race did not up and die after Ethan was sent to the future. There was 400 years of continued research and evidence of how far they came to the cure or solution. Either Ethan could have put the pieces together of that research, or have the movie lead up to the realization that sending back the plants would have been the solution.
In conclusion, great movie idea, but the movie could have been gold if it had put a little more thought into the connections between characters and the ending. 2/5 at best
I would recommend watching “After Earth” Starring Will and Jaden Smith. It follows a similar idea with an extremely better story.
