More after-school special than Speilberg's autobiography. Much of the high school antics felt invented and not at all authentic/overly dramatized. where the family drama seemed real, there's none of that speilberg magic, only the scene between father and son towards the end of the film did I sense any genuine goodness from the characters. You'd think this would be Speilberg's love letter to movies of his youth. As depicted in this film his ascent to becoming a great director is simply being able to buy a more expensive camera. The run time makes it a slog.
