This movie receives far too much hate for the fact that it's cinema. I've seen too many people focusing on the extremity of Wanda's actions over her reasoning for it. Wanda is not a villain that has the will to kill millions of people for the sake of what she wants, she's a villain that is on a 0-detour route to peace for herself. She is incredibly similar to many villains in different movies that see themselves and their actions as justified, because of horrid past experience against their own people or witnessing the destruction of other peoples. Thanos, for example, wished to wipe out half the population of the universe so that the other half can prosper in peace without the difficulty of finding resources.
There is no taking into account, as well, that Wanda has lost something important to her in almost every single appearance:
Pre-apperance: Her parents
Age of ultron: Her brother
Infinity war: Her love
Wandavision: Her children
The amount of buildup of the loss that she has faced has been ignored for the sake of criticising the destruction she has brought.
When she made a fake set of children for herself, they were taken away from her, and she was forced to face the realisation of how reality really is. So no, she is not going to make herself a new set of kids.
The other critique I've often seen is that Wanda was seen as too powerful, and that the cameos of Reed Richards and Professor X were wasted for them to be built up and brought down within 20 minutes.
The cameos were simply there to introduce the characters for their return with the Fantastic 4 movie, and however Xavier will return, if ever.
And then the darkhold.
The MCU is lightly based off of the comics, following large plots, villains, and some arcs as well. The darkhold in the comics was as strong as it was in this movie, maybe even more. Scarlet witch is one of the strongest characters in the comics, and they will keep that as they have already introduced her and her arc.
Some points people have brought up, however, is what is stopping me from giving the movie 5 stars:
- Terrible subplot with doctor strange's love interest
- America's lack of control of her powers getting thrown away for a deus ex machina moment against scarlet witch
- Little to no introduction of the multiverse at the start of the movie
- Weird plot progression
And things I loved I haven't mentioned:
- Different strange variants
- WONG
- Darkhold first appearance
- Beautiful scene with wanda finally meeting her kids
- Strange's all-knowing nature going away as he travels through the multiverse
