This movie was nothing more than a 7 million dollar fulfillment of the director's sexual fantasies. There is a reason it only earned a 59% on Rotten Tomatoes, and I believe it deserves even lower. It makes sense why the movie was a failure and lost 3.5 million dollars.
I watched the movie the whole way through, and it was a total waste of time. The movie moved incredibly slowly for no reason with no character development or real plot. What character development did occur was weak and overly direct, using basic cues such as changes in wardrobe and cliche scripting. Jesse's increased narcissism throughout the film made no sense, especially with the confusing hallucinations she went through. Each character was entirely onesided which made for an uninteresting film. With proper pacing, the movie could have been over in 20 minutes.
The sheer amount of unnecessary female nudity and sexual scenes makes it clear that this movie could have only been directed by a man, and one with no dignity at that. For example, two naked women showering in blood together, sensually rubbing their bodies or a topless woman hosing down an empty pool. Both were oversexualized and pointless to the film. No director should ever force his creepy necrophilia and lesbian fetishes onto his viewers. Also, no real effort was made into accurately depicting the world of modeling, instead of fetishizing models in unrealistic settings. We didn't need to see all of the main women in this movie naked to get across the basic message that the modeling industry is shady and full of jealousy.
The supposedly "deep" and "dark" themes and symbolism of the movie are relatively basic and obvious. Other viewers would like to think that the real message probably just flew over the heads of people who didn't enjoy the film; when in reality, they are only able to pick up on the most elementary writing and claim that it is complex.
