Really well made show with good production quality and a coherent plot. A good tv show continuation of the origional karate kid movies. However it does have its issues. It is extreemely campy and very bizarre. Geeky might be a word I use to describe what I think of this tv show. I wouldnt quite say it makes me cringe watching it, but it is definitely dancing the line. I think the older I get, I realize just how strange it is that these troublesome outcast kids turn to karate instead of gangs or other more realistic unhealthy outlets. Suspension of disbelief is a must have when going to see this cultural phenomenon. The show follows origional characters from the 1980s movie trilogy such as Johnny and Danniel LaRusso, as well as new ones, including Miguel a struggling angsty mexican teen, Johnny's struggling estranged teenage son who can't quite figure out a cool haircut, and Daniel's wife, who to my knowledge, wasn't featured in th origional movies, instead they just took someone who looked like a mom and put her on Daniel's side. Some characters are better than others and certain people are definitely better actors. Johnny, originally the high school bully, is a phenomenal actor and he plays the role of a disenfranchised down on his luck has been so well. I am astonished at how well he fits the role. Typically I would complain about his seeming lack of emotion, but in this case, it works as it is believable that after such an awful life, he would appear dead inside. The worst character by far however, almost ruins the entire show. Daniel's daughter, whose name I refuse to remember is the absolute worst person on the entire cast list. I can't tell if she is just a bad actor, or if the writers just hate her, or perhaps both. The dialogue that comes out of this child's mouth makes me want to throw my tv into the ocean. She's just awful, plastic, and the tv embodiment of a preteen middle school girl, which this show could have done without. She's just there to be the girl. And my criticism isn't because she is a woman, there are some excellent female characters in the show, such as Miguel's mom, and peyton list's character. Daniel's daughter just plain sucks and I wouldnt be mad if she unexplainably was not in the next season, like if the producers just didnt invite her back next season and no one mentioned her on screen, that would honestly be okay with me. She is honestly why I give this show 2 stars.
