I watched the Director's cut and would recommend people watch that version instead of the theatrical/abridged version. While the story is not completely historically accurate, as movies are naturally dramatized, it does an incredible job at creating the atmosphere for each scene. From the diplomacy and battles to the love and family, each scene has something that can speak to the heart if one has an open mind when watching the movie. It does well in showing the moral greyness in the crusades, despite the fact there is a "protagonist" and "antagonist". The directors cut is longer, and some may feel it too slow, but I found it like watching a father walking a bride down the isle (for lack of a better description) in that every step, though slow, feels poignant and meaningful. The movie feels like a love letter to history to the tune of a funeral march
