Antebellum fearlessly encapsulates the literal horrors of Black enslavement under the Confederacy, refusing to compromise on telling the truth. The film connects the oppressive past with the present in a way that unveils modern racial oppression for what it is, without coming right out and saying it. The feeling the viewer is left with is the answer. So, if you find yourself sick to your stomach, that’s the point. Monae is impeccable, as is the rest of the cast. The screenwriting achieves everything and more, and the production quality, camera work, and editing are exceptional. The score is beautifully haunting.
Must watch.
