Based of the books? More like loosely has a semblance to a severely distorted version of the books. On a real note there are very much things that only people who have read the books will understand however it is clear that this film is a completely different story. Even then as a stand alone film there are giant leaps in both logic and character development that occur on multiple occasions. They are jarring at best and utterly embarrassing at worst. One can only pray this film series ends here as it is clearly doing a huge disservice to the cleverly and intricately designed universe of Artemia Fowl from the books. I will never understand why film makers insist on completely changing not only the story but the universe that their films are based off of. The most flagrant example in my opinion are the atrocity of the “Percy Jackson” film duology. A very lucrative book series that continues to enthrall fans turned sour on screens. On the opposite side of the coin there is the very obviously successful, both in print and film, “Harry Potter” franchise. What I believe made this film series popular was that the filmmakers payed attention to details. The books are chockfull of memorable moments that translated marvelously on screen. The filmmakers obviously appreciated the delicate craftsmanship of the books and were determined to deliver those fan favorite moments to the fans of the books. Percy Jackson could’ve been and I believe still can be worked into a wonderful full adaptations of proper attention is afforded into not attempting to transform an already amazing book series into a better film series (which has honestly never worked out as I see it) but instead try to bring the books to life like the appear in the fans minds for most fans I think sometimes feel as if by reading the books a movie has already played out in their minds eye. A filmmakers job should be to make that minds eye movie physically manifest into film for new coming fans to enjoy. If you don’t like that idea then don’t claim the movie is based off the books.
