The only positive thing about this movie is that my elderly grandmother got something out of seeing it. I however, disliked the message and the delivery of the movie Overcomer.
The emotional center of the movie is the reunion of a father and daughter. However, the circumstances in which these characters “become a family again” are impossibly problematic:
1. a lone female athlete becomes the sole member of a school’s cross country program coached by one male faculty with no oversight or accountability.
2. Said coach makes several un-authorized field trips with the athlete.
3. Coach deliberately goes against the wishes of the athlete’s legal guardian
4. Unexplained, sudden, and convenient rule-change to the sport (cross-country)
Even if I agreed with the religious message (that this movie pushes as if it were propaganda) I would still have arguments against the reckless actions of the “hero” characters who are supposed to be responsible educators.
