A brilliant film. I first saw it aired in serial form many years ago but have just watched the Netflix full version, such as it is, after seeing the first part of the Sky broadcast of the remake, which I found disappointing to say the least. The original was excellent, and seeing it for the second time I've had some thoughts about it that someone could maybe answer. The captain is never named throughout the film, unlike the rest of the principal case members. There must be a reason for that, as such things are not done by accident. It appears to me that the Captain is at one with the Boat. His unflinching faith in its ability to come through all that's thrown at it, and the last scene as, dying himself, he watches to the last as the boat sinks dying in the harbour. A very profound movie in all respects, and probably ranks amongst the greatest.
