Without a sequel it's just not stellar... here's why;
1. The acting isn't connective, this is how I feel about most of the movie.
2. The action scenes are almost strong...but not enough.
3. The storyline is as expected...too complex...I had no idea what was going on and who half of the races or clans were.
4. I haven't read the books but I was told about about "spice" and lack of air and both concepts were virtually missing here... big disappointment.
5. The CGI was enjoyable but I felt like action scenes with it were not built up properly and I really expected to see a sand worm jump through the air...big let down.
6. Hans Zimmer bizarrely envoked THE HANSON EFFECT here. By the end of the film I wanted to run out of the theater I felt like the same Zimmer melody was used over and over again and the melody rarely changed. In addition it was unbearably loud. It reminds me of a concert where the guitars were turned up to cover a bad singer....same thing here...except I felt it was used to force emotion that should have come from the acting and story. The movie wasn't epic as it was pretentious'
7. I really love the Blade Runner 2049 movie Denis made. Go see that..That is proof of Denis at his best.
8. Why it deserves an extra star (making it two) >To be fair this may just be building for something better. Battle Star Galactica (2000) was amazing but it took 8 episodes, and a mini movie (watch before the first 8 episodes) to get hooked, maybe that's what's happening here. I think many fan boys like, Angry Joe, are lying about their reviews just to get the sequel made since it wasn't official. I agree w/ Joe this could definitely change the game for the better.
9. They tossed famous actors at this like a monkey throwing poop at it's friends. Lot's of great actors just make it feel artificial. Thankfully the lead is solid and not ridiculously famous here so he pulls us through.
10. I loved the dark cinematography but it still missed the mark for me...it was almost awesome....almost vibed with it....maybe on an LED TV it would be better. Again like most things in this movie it missed the mark....so so close in so many ways for me.
A sequal might save this. Like I mentioned about BSG the first couple episodes don't have to be perfect to tell a perfect story.. I just felt like I just craved things that never happened. As a standalone film it really misses in so many ways but I did enjoy the overall aura and attempt.
