As an expat of 7 years to Japan, let me tell you that anybody who has worked in Japan will instantly connect with the characters in this novel. You know or have met them all before and that only adds to this absolutely delightful tale!
But don't worry, the story is written for everyone to enjoy! This book scratched an itch which is rarely satiated: complex and flawed characters who come together through the course of a fairy tale which seems to only get darker and darker with each page. This is EXACTLY my favorite kind of story! I found myself likening it to American Gods and Anansi Boys. If you enjoyed those, then this is definitely right up your alley!
The author does an amazing job unraveling a beautiful world in the scenic and untouched countryside of Japan; where the hustle and bustle of the city is replaced with the lazy song of the cicada, and occasional passing car -- this ain't Tokyo and that adds a magical Studio Ghibli touch.
A suspenseful mystery all the way to the very end; I found myself hungrily devouring page after page. With each question answered, several new ones pulled me through twists and took me deep down into dark and magical places.
What a breath of fresh air! These kinds of stories, written with this level of mastery, don't come around often.
