I don’t even know where to begin. I want to preface this by saying I didn’t want a new ending but was excited when I heard it announced. I love Dexter Morgan.
I kept an open mind through out the show, mostly because of my own faulty optimism. Having finished and collected my thoughts; what an ill thought out season.
The actors/actresses did a fantastic job which is why it even gets 2 stars. The writing on the other hand… the entire plot was filled with everything but the kitchen sink. I don’t even know why. All it did was leave huge plot holes and unanswered questions. With each new episode I thought we were going to learn the “why” or “how” and it would give the fans this mind blowing epiphany. Nope. Just more questions, confusion, and plot holes. Harrison’s character and story are so underdeveloped that it’s hard to make a connection with him. Dexter is… not Dexter. Not the one we all came to love anyway. So many of the secondary characters are underdeveloped and sloppily written. The Kurt storyline feels more like a distraction and ends fairly abruptly even though it had so much potential. Maybe that’s what happens when you put 3 serial killers in a season that’s really meant to tie up loose ends. Even the finale sucked. After all that, what a disappointment.
Overall, very shallow and left a bad taste in my mouth. No loose ends tied. No layers. No explanations. I’m going to pretend this season never happened and pray they don’t make more seasons focusing on Harrison.
