SPOILERS!
This is coming from someone who has been a huge fan of this series: I thought this movie was great!... but not for everyone.
I really like this movie and enjoyed every second of it! So here are some positives/negatives I have with this movie:
Positives:
The acting was great. Ben Schwartz really nailed it as Sonic. I also thought James Marsden and Tika Sumpter were good. Jim Carrey as Robotnik. My god, Jim Carrey as Robotnik. People say he's the best thing in this movie, and I fully agree to that. Everyone in my theater was dying of laughter in every scene he was in. The action scenes I thought were really cool. The final battle was cool (I guess Sonic is Thor now). There were also some scenes that are very similar to the Quicksilver scene from X-Men. Some people may say those scenes are boring and cliched, but I still thought they were cool and fit Sonic's character well. Most of the jokes were also very funny and got a laugh out of me. And the references. This movie was clearly made for fans first and foremost. Green Hill Zone in the beginning looked beautiful and even had Sonic Mania music in the background (congrats, Hyper Potions!). There are tons of easter eggs from the games, and even Sanic was in the movie. Sanic. Is in. The movie. And that post credit scene was amazing! Everyone in the theater was cheering when Tails appeared. So those are all the positives I have with this movie.
Negatives:
This movie is a bit cliched. It does come across as just another "cartoon character enters the real world" movie. It has some very cliched scenes like "cartoon character enters the real world," "character meets human," and "just when the character and human begin to get along, they have an argument." There are also some very cringeworthy scenes too. Sonic flosses. Twice. And the product placement. My god, the product placement. This has some of the worst product placement I have ever seen in a movie. This movie makes Man of Steel look subtle. There are two adds for Olive Garden. There an ad for Zillow. There's a scene where Robotnik breaks his glasses and is like "someone call Optical Illusions. They always have the right pair for me." But yeah those are really all the complaints I have for this movie.
Overall, I really liked the Sonic movie, and if you're a Sonic fan or if you have kids, you'll like it too. I will say, however, that it's mainly just made for fans and kids. If you're not a Sonic fan or you don't have kids, this could just come across as another "cartoon character enters the real world" movie. That doesn't mean you'll HATE it, but it'll come across as boring and forgettable. I still really liked this movie and am really proud of how well it's doing. I can't wait to see if they make a sequel because I really want to see where this story goes. Maybe in the next movie, they'll all go to the Olive Garden and get a never ending pasta bowl. Because when you're there, you're family.
