If you want to watch a lengthy advertisement about rich Chinese people, then go for it.
I watched this movie just because I had read the sequel to this - "Rich people problems". I read that book only because it would give me a glimpse into Asian people & their culture, and I watched this movie for the same reason too, but boy! Was I wrong!
They try to impress us with ludicrous displays of wealth, like parties on a private ship, having choreographed swimmers in Engagement parties etc but I don't think it impresses anyone including their own guests!
Its the most typical hare brained rom com plot ever - poor girl meets rich guy, they get married. With one difference, we have Asian actors here. The actors are not even believable. Constance Wu who plays Rachel Chu in this movie, is actually such a riot on the show - Fresh off the boat, but here she fails miserably. Maybe she's cringing so deeply inside that the romance in her face seems like constipation. The guy who plays Nick, he has no expressions whatsoever on his face. The saving Grace is Michelle Yeoh who plays Nick's mom Eleanor, I can't think of anyone who couldve played the role of a dignified schemer better.
There is really no depth in the movie. It seems Singapore got a free tourism ad, apart from that, zilch!
