After seeing a review saying "if you've only played for three hours etc" I am back for an update as I have found myself playing the game again without the rose colored glasses I have for Skate. Long story short, Skater XL is a new experience, but it is an unpolised one. Reviewing it on PS4 I'd say I definitely had a learning curve I had to adjust to, but I'll layout the pros and cons.
Cons first.
I can't get off the board. Now, you can click triangle to reposition yourself, even to access rooftops.
Transfers in and out of bowls need some polishing. My character loves to attach himself to the lip of a bowl or half pipe instead of going onto the flat surface a majority of the time.
Alittle more guidance on what tricks I can't actually do. I get it, the gimmick in this game is I can control both feet with the joysticks, but I'll tell you right now, I mainly do shove its, simple flip tricks (heel, kick, hard) and that's honestly about it. Same goes for the grabs.
Falls. I ran into a traffic cone and bailed hard as hell. This man loves to eat it like there's no tomorrow in the funniest of ways at times, which isn't terrible, but it happens. Often.
Maps. They're alright. They're missing something and I don't know quite what, maybe more space, more areas to pick up speed or go longer distances, but there's just something that I feel I'm missing out on when I play in these sandbox's.
Lack of flat ground tricks. Manuel's are possible, but anything other then a manny, which also, isn't a game breaker, but it is missed.
Interaction with surroundings. It'd be nice to be able to move stuff to my liking, but that maybe just be because Skate rolls in my mind still
Pros!
It's a skating game. The feeling of getting on a virtual board and not physically causing harm to your body will forever remain enjoyable and addictive. Even after my first remarks on the game I found myself coming back because I do love to feel like I actually know how to skate and pull off some tight tricks.
Customization. You get it all from the start, which is good! You don't really have to earn new boards or clothing and as far as I know for now, no characters either, so there's no need to "grind" (skater pun) for new it's, so that's chill.
Maps! Yes, a pro and con. I'm grateful for the mega ramp map because it's helped me get better at the controls and allowed more leniency and space to pull off some fun moves, even if I only know about 5
Sense of accomplishment? Im kinda digging for pros here, but it's true, you do feel Abit more like a skater as you come on the scene as a noob and slowly become more comfortable with how everything works. I'm sure in due time I'll become better and enjoy myself more, but to be completely honest, I still prefer Skate.
All in all, my opinion still stands. If you've been wanting a new skate game to play for your console, by all means, get a copy, if you're looking for Skate though, it is not that, but as I play more I can say it still is enough to scratch the itch until skate 4.
