This is the story of an arrogant, self entitled young man and how he is a silent participant in the sexual harassment and bullying of his less popular classmate. The young woman is sexually harassed and groped at a night club without retribution from anyone. She doesn't stand up for herself or have any boundaries or even any friends who will stand up for her.
In the real world sexual assault is damaging and has consequences and this show minimizes those damages to the point where they are non-existent which makes it the most sexist show on Hulu that I've ever seen.
I hated the misplaced Elliott Smith song and I'm a huge fan of his. The show wasn't worthy of the song. Totally overrated. One of those "sacrifice" shows you have to watch because your significant other likes it, except worse. This woman was attacked by a sexual predator at a nightcluband her significant other was standing by and did nothing to stop it. I find this reprehensible.
This show is about a young man's macho facade and how he refuses to part with it even at the expense of his own happiness and the happiness of his lover and mother. It's just another boring show about the white male perspective. Yawn. I can't get through episode 4.
I just want to add that I find it pathetic that so many women think a show is romantic when the male character treats his girlfriend like dirt for half the season. He lets his friends torment her and call her ugly and flat chested. He does nothing about it. He has no empathy for her feelings and after his friend torments her he takes his ex girlfriend to the dance.
This filmmaking is a reflection of the misogynistic culture that we live in. People calling bullying and sexual harassment romantic is just plain sick. It reflects this rape culture we have where if a woman is unobtainable to a man then she is dismissed as ugly and undesirable.
Despite the deep bond that he has with his girlfriend, he betrays that bond over and over when he pretends not to know her in school. It's nothing but a UK version of Saved By The Bell with nudity and sex. Again and again, the show degrades women and mother's and I keep wondering where people get this idea that this is a romance. Sex does not equal romance. When you treat someone the way the male protagonist does, you are using someone. Here, he uses her when it suits him and forgets she exists when it suits him.
There's absolutely nothing creative, new or magical about a narcissistic, completely non-committal, emotionally cut off "boyfriend." I am deeply disturbed by how cavalier this show is about sexism, misogyny and sexual assault. To add salt in the wound, they call it a romance. Shame on you Hulu.
