While “Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury” is a show that pays tribute to it’s predecessors, it takes huge risks in trying to make Gundam more appealing to a newer, younger generation with different values.
This is sure to upset some older fans and senior citizens whom feel that the new era of Gundam strays too far from the intricacies of political and military warfare, instead, turning to a high school setting with duels as the main plot.
But though the setting has changed from a battlefield with adolescent male soldiers to a high school with a female protagonist as the lead, I believe that this series still pays respect to the older Gundam series’ by delving deep into the drama that is political and military warfare.
I urge fans to look past this show’s similarities to other anime, especially “Revolutionary Girl Utena” and focus on the wide diversity of characters, interesting plot and beautiful animation. Can’t a show use a similar plot device whilst still being unique in it’s own way? If you start a bakery with a recipe, you found online, tweaked around with it, does that make your goods any less special?
Besides if anything……..the mech designs are awesome.
