Style over substance, Lynch tries to be clever and instead muddies a good idea with a pretentious writing style obviously meant to obscure the story. I’ve read other books where the author uses no quotation marks to indicate dialogue, sometimes to great effect like The Road, but in Prophet Song it only serves to confuse the reader and hide how derivative the story is (read It Can’t Happen Here?). Overall a terrible book, embarrassing that it was even nominated for the Booker award. If this is where literature is headed, count me out, I’ll stick to rereading the classics.
