This was on tv. I wanted noise while working. I remembered I watched it before. This plot was pretty disturbing and left a sour aftertaste.
I think there are more layers than just her insecurities. She’s dealing with heir/spare syndrome … 1st born is the golden child and that brother, who “has it all” took away the one thing that gave her confidence. That so-called friend betrayed (Did she really like her or was the friendship an excuse to see the brother?) and abandoned her. The betrayal damn-near triggers her insecurities to next-level proportions.
Her family has no empathy, essentially showing her that her feelings don’t matter. The brother broke the sibling code. The ex-friend broke girl code, then they gaslighted her saying she’s being dramatic and should get over it. It’s not like the brother & friend ran into each years later and fell in love. They basically did it behind her back.
The mother’s comment about her recently-deceased father being disappointed with her was borderline emotionally abusive.
Who wouldn’t act out? This would be hard for anyone to face let alone an insecure teen coming of age.
Great delivery since I still find it disturbing.
