I truly don't understand all the hate. As stated in the opening credits, it is BASED ON THE COMICS just like the original. The two films just took two drastically different routes of portraying the story of Eric Draven. This version focuses more on Eric and Shelly's relationship (which I enjoyed as the original only shows us brief flashbacks) and has some horror elements, such as the use of the "Devil". They also differ in genre, this version being a John Wick-like action and even romance versus the original being a dark fantasy. Go in with the right mindset and you'll probably enjoy it a lot more than anticipated. A few notes:
1. The 1994 Crow will always be the best version. It was radical at the time it was released and still is today. I've seen it many times and it simply can't be outdone. However, I think this film offers the new generation a similar experience.
2. Bill Skarsgard was AMAZING in this role!! He is a very talented actor that I have followed for a long time, so I was excited to see him playing such a beloved character. In this film, he shows us the very heart and soul of Eric Draven. His performance adds a touch of reality to the movie, reminding us that it can't rain all the time. If you don't like the movie, you'll likely still enjoy his performance.
3. I would have liked to have seen more of the crow itself and Eric Draven as a musician. Unfortunately, these details were all but erased in this version.
4. The SFX work is remarkable. Very next level and high budget killing scenes. If you're not a fan of gore, don't bother.
5. -1 star for terrible choice of music. I definitely preferred the gothic rock music over the alternative music featured in this film but to each their own.
